BIO
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, I had a high school art teacher, Virginia Carnes, who is responsible for cultivating my interest in art and enhancing technical skill in painting. She encouraged me to be fearless and to pursue my own artistic agenda vs. what was fashionable or en vogue. While not a traditional path for an artist, I received a bachelor’s degree in International Studies and French from Emory University. I used my summers and free time to further my artistic interests and grew to love painting acrylics on canvas – mostly large scale paintings, which I often sold to friends and colleagues. After moving to Boston in 2000, I worked for a Swedish company, EF Education, in marketing and sales before pursuing a Master’s in Museum Studies at Harvard in 2007. Shortly thereafter, I began to work in higher education, in the function of admissions, marketing and recruiting for INSEAD, an international business school with campuses in France and Singapore. These two very different parts of the world inspired a range of styles and subjects in my paintings. After close to a decade overseas, I moved back to Boston in 2012 with my husband and two children, and ever since I have been working as the Associate Director of doctoral programs at Harvard Business School. Whenever I am able, I enjoy trying to capture the spirit of the places I have been to with bold colors and regional detail in order to share my love of different cultures through painting with vibrant acrylics on canvas.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always had a strong affinity for color. I try to capture the visual and aesthetic power of color in its purest form, accenting as much raw pigment with different details and compositions. As an enthusiastic international traveler, I try to weave together the beauty and elegance I see in different parts of the world with my desire to also honor the complexities of different cultures using varied palette combinations and patterns. My recent work in particular focuses on using broad landscapes of color infused with detailed designs to achieve a unique compositional balance. Building on works of Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Dufy and many others, I try to incorporate and expand their search for an equilibrium between simplicity of design as well as originality of concept. Ultimately, my goal is to pay homage to the inherent beauty of the many places I’ve been and people I’ve met in order to attract, inspire and engage the viewer in a visual journey.
