BAA member Laura Quincy Jones

Laura Quincy Jones

For our January meeting, we welcome BAA member, Laura Quincy Jones, who will be our featured guest, sharing her journey as an artist.

Laura Quincy Jones is an English/literacy teacher and illustrator living in Cambridge, MA and Havana, Cuba. Her primary profession and passion is as an educator, teaching in inner-city public high schools and community college, gardening in juvenile detention facilities, and art in adult education centers for 14 years. Breaks in teaching have taken her on lots of non-school-based learning adventures. She spent years living and working on organic farms in Australia, months slow-traveling across Japan an Russia, and years living in Cuba where she found her husband, Yasser, and their daughter was born. Laura and Yasser run a small travel business called Cuba Art Adventures in which they design fun, down-to-earth, and inspiring trips for small groups who want to meet Cuba from the inside.

Watercolor-with-Ink:
Illustrated Adventures from Cuba, Australia, and More

Working on farms across Australia and getting to know the neighborhoods of Havana, Cuba, Laura made 50+ watercolor-with-ink illustrations while living in interesting places with time to observe, enjoy, and document on paper. Her images are primarily place-scapes: street scenes, farm-scapes, interiors, and kitchen portraits that capture quiet, warm moments of daily life. From the dirt-stained beauty of farm life in Australia to Cuba’s tropical step back in time, Laura’s illustrations celebrate the details that compose an aesthetically fascinating environment. See and hear how her travel paintings evolved, and share reflections or questions about your own travel-art, watercolor, or illustration experiences.
