SUMMARY:Animal Art Exhibit at Belmont Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Wonderfully diverse\, thought-provoking\, fun exhibit\nAnimals — from beasts of prey to household pets — have been a staple of artistic expression since cave painting at the very dawn of humanity. Whether as totems\, allegory\, decoration\, or simply for their “fearsome symmetry\,” animals have been a presence in the works of history’s greatest masters from DaVinci’s horse studies\, through Rousseau’s primitive wildlife\, to Picasso’s bull fetish. Yet\, the role of animals in art is often overlooked.We have terms for ‘portraits\,’ ‘landscapes.’ and ’‘still lives’\, but none for art with animal subjects. ‘Animal Art’ gets no respect. \nBelmont Gallery of Art opens its tenth anniversary season with a long overdue appreciation of Animals in Art\, featuring animal artworks in a variety of media — painting\, sculpture\, photography collage\, fabric art — selected by jurors and veterinarians\, Dr. Suzanne Kay and Dr. Dawn Binder\, from Belmont’s Cushing Square Veterinary Clinic. \nThe menagerie is a ‘must-see” for art lovers and animal lovers of all ages. And visitors can help homeless and abused pets at the same time. Ten percent of all sales of artwork will be donated to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell to support its mission to find loving families for abandoned and mistreated pets. \nOpening Reception: September 19\, 5 – 8 pm\nDuration of Show: September 14 – October 17. • Hours:  Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, Sunday 1 – 4 p.m.\n \nSeveral BAA members are presenting artwork in this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:Works by Boston Printmakers & Icelandic Printmaking Association\n Companion Exhibit: Recent Icelandic Prints\n\nat Scandinavian Cultural Center\, Newton (through Nov.)\nWe are pleased to present “Continental Drift: Printmakers Converge”\, an exhibit of work by members of the Boston Printmakers and the Icelandic Printmakers Association. This cross-cultural show was inspired by the Boston Printmakers August 2014 trip to Iceland and the resulting collaboration between the two groups of artists. “Continental Drift” showcases the similarities as well as the differences that exist between the two printmaking groups—but ultimately forges a bridge between the two cultures. “Continental Drift” showcases the art that was created during that process—first exhibited in Reykjavik two months ago and now displayed in Belmont and Newton. \n  \n  \nSpecial Events\nThe Belmont Gallery of Art’s Opening Reception for “Continental Drift” takes place Friday\, Oct. 24\, 6-8pm.\nThe Scandinavian Center’s Nordic Hall will host its Artists Reception and Talk\, Thurs.\, Nov. 20\, 5:30-7:30pm. \nIn addition\, the Belmont Gallery of Art will host an Artists Print Talk with American and Icelandic printmakers Nov. 23\, 2-4pm.\nAll events are free and open to the public. \nGallery Hours\nThursday and Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, Sunday 1 – 4 p.m.
